About South Uist

The west side of South Uist is mainly machair (a fertile low-lying coastal plain) edged by a continuous sandy beach. The east coast is hilly with the peaks of Beinn Mhr at 620 metres (2,034 ft) and Hecla just a bit lower at 606 metres (1,988 ft). The main town in South Uist is Lochboisdale, from which ferries sail to Oban on the mainland and to Castlebay on Barra. The island is also linked to Benbecula in the north and Eriskay by causeways, you can also sail to Barra on a ferry from Eriskay.

The Uists have a rich cultural heritage encompassing the Gaelic language and crofting, the communities are close-knit and friendly. The islands are well known for the variety of wildlife and is one of the last remaining places in the UK where the Corncrake still breeds. In the summer, because of the low-intensity methods of farming the machair is a profusion of wild flowers.

Geologically South Uist has a bedrock of ancient Lewisian Gneiss, these are the oldest rocks in the British Isles today.
